How many gallons of fresh water and how many acres of grass does it take to make one hamburger?

A cow has to be killed to make hamburger, so each cow can only produce a set number of hamburgers. Each cow must consume a lot to stay alive and make those hamburgers.
So what is the cost to natural resources of a hamburger?
The point is that a hamburger seems like a very inefficient bit of food. I can grow a 100 tortillas and thousands of beans in a lot less space than is required by a hamburger.
